Sadness and Loss
There are times in some people's lives where they experience great loss and overwhelming sadness because someone they love (usually a family member) has died or has moved away. People express their sadness in many different ways. Can you think of a time when you, or someone you know, has felt incredible sadness? What helped you, or the person you know, overcome the sadness? While you read Islands of the Blue Dolphins you will learn about a girl who experiences great losses. Making personal connections to the story while you read will help you understand the character and the choices she makes.
How does Karan's animal family grow and change? Why does Karana vow never to kill another animal?

Karana's animal family grows because she soon makes friends with Rontu who used to be one of her enemies. Karana's animal family changes because Rontu dies and she than dicovers Rontu-Aru (son of Rontu).Karana vows to never kill or harm another animal because that is how she and Rontu met and now all the animals are basically harmless and she sees the animals in a different way since becoming close to Rontu.
How her animal family grows is that her birds?had?baby's,?and she?caught a fox?then let her go.?Karana'sanimal family changes because Rontu died and then she caught his son and named him Rontu Aru. Karana? vows never to kill another animal again? because??she had an animal family and if you have an animal family you probably don't want to kill an animal it would be like killing your own family.

Karana's animal family grows and changes because she got Rontu the the birds and the fox that didn't stay long.It changes by when Rontu dies she caught another dog that looked like Rontu and might have been his son so she named him Rontu-Aru(son of Rontu).She vows to never kill another animal again because she has an animal familiy and if she kills an animal it's like killing her family.
