Why does Karana decide to canoe to the country lying to the east? What causes her to return to the island? Why is she happy after she returns?

Sadness and Loss
There are times in some people's lives where they experience great loss and overwhelming sadness because someone they love (usually a family member) has died or has moved away. People express their sadness in many different ways. Can you think of a time when you, or someone you know, has felt incredible sadness? What helped you, or the person you know, overcome the sadness? While you read Islands of the Blue Dolphins you will learn about a girl who experiences great losses. Making personal connections to the story while you read will help you understand the character and the choices she makes.

Karana canoes back to the island because she is scared and lonely and misses Rontu-Aru. Karana feels happy when she gets back to the island because she did not think Rontu-Aru could handle being in a canoe for a long period of time and she would rather have the company than be all alone in a canoe, not knowing what would happen to her next.
Karana decides to canoe to the country lying east because?she had given up hope on the ship coming back for her also she remembered?which?way?the ship that had left her behind went.?What causes her to return to the island is that there was a crack in the canoe that she was in and she thought that she had a better chance of getting back to the island than to get to the country lying east. She was happy when she got back to the island because she hadn't?stood on solid ground for days and she was probably tired or sea sick.

Karana decides to head to the country in the east because she can't stand the island because of all the bad memories it holds like Ramo and her father and all the men dying. She returns to the island because she can't find out which way to go and her canoe was leaking and she'd been out on the sea for days and still haven't arrived at the country yet. She's happy after she returns because she grew up on the island and the island is beautiful and she's glad that she's on land.
