Sadness and Loss
There are times in some people's lives where they experience great loss and overwhelming sadness because someone they love (usually a family member) has died or has moved away. People express their sadness in many different ways. Can you think of a time when you, or someone you know, has felt incredible sadness? What helped you, or the person you know, overcome the sadness? While you read Islands of the Blue Dolphins you will learn about a girl who experiences great losses. Making personal connections to the story while you read will help you understand the character and the choices she makes.
While reading the first nine chapters think about how Karana felt when her brother died. Do you think her response is usual? Explain.

When Karanna's brother died that was definitely a surprise to me. I know if I had a brother and he died because of a pack of wild dogs I would be very upset and I would also want to kill the dogs, especially the leader. I think her response isn't normal when she leaves her brother in her room but it's normal that she plans revenge on the dogs

I was suprised that Karana didn't cry to death when her brother died by the pack of wild dogs although it's good that she wants to kill them.Also,I don't get why Karana jumped off the boat i know her brother was still on the island, but thaat was a little crazy.I am now getting far more interested in the book than I was before because now Karana's on her own and I know that's when the action starts so I'm looking forward to reading the book.

I think that Karanna felt mad and sad when her brother died. I think that her response is kind of usual and kind of unusual because I understand that she would want to kill the wild dogs if they killed her brother. But what I don't understand is that she burns down the town of galas-at and she burns her brother in the fire with the town.
